It was developed and maintained by Fraunhofer FOKUS. As an European, non-proprietary project BerliOS pursued the goal to support the various Open Source players and provide a neutral mediator function. In 2011 over 4800 projects have been hosted on BerliOS, with 50,000 registered users and over 2.6 million file downloads each month. We are proud that with BerliOS we have brought the idea of an OSS repository to Europe. Meanwhile, the concept has prevailed and there are many good alternatives.

Unfortunately, as a research institute Fraunhofer FOKUS has only few opportunities to operate a repository like BerliOS. Such a project will only work with a follow-up financing, or with sponsors or partners taking over the repository. In the field of OSS this is a difficult undertaking. In a recent survey the community indicated some support in funds and manpower which we would like to thank you for. Unfortunately, the result is not enough to put the project on a sustainable financial basis. In addition the search for sponsors or partners was not successful.

Open Source is understood by Fraunhofer FOKUS as a paradigm for future-oriented intelligent use of IT. It hurts us all the more that we are forced to discontinue the hosting for BerliOS by 31.12.2011.

Smoke on the water Deep Purple Enver Izmaylov Lenie Izmaylova

Saint Obama?

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; A. R. Hoare
What was wrong with ALGOL and how those mistakes has been planned to avoid in ADA. But that plan failed - at least at the time original paper has been published.

An interesting quote:

And so, the best of my advice to the originators and designers of ADA has been ignored. In this last resort, I appeal to you, representatives of the programming profession in the United States, and citizens concerned with the welfare and safety of your own country and of mankind: Do not allow this language in its present state to be used in applications where reliability is critical, i.e., nuclear power stations, cruise missiles, early warning systems, anti-ballistic missile defense systems. The next rocket to go astray as a result of a programming language error may not be an exploratory space rocket on a harmless trip to Venus: It may be a nuclear warhead exploding over one of our own cities. An unreliable programming language generating unreliable programs constitutes a far greater risk to our environment and to our society than unsafe cars, toxic pesticides, or accidents at nuclear power stations. Be vigilant to reduce that risk, not to increase it.

JavaOne 2007 slides available online

JavaOne 2007 slides

Java finally becoming what it was intended to be from the very beginning

Java finally becoming what it was intended to be from the very beginning. The desire for compatibility (even on a bug compatibility level) is high. The panelists expressed an opinion that the diversity of compatible but different implementations is good for a Java community since it will allow to accommodate the needs of different categories of end-users and customers. Unfortunately, due to a really strange reasons, the Apple has decided to postpone the release of the Leopard:

Apple Statement

iPhone has already passed several of its required certification tests and is on schedule to ship in late June as planned. We can’t wait until customers get their hands (and fingers) on it and experience what a revolutionary and magical product it is. However, iPhone contains the most sophisticated software ever shipped on a mobile device, and finishing it on time has not come without a price — we had to borrow some key software engineering and QA resources from our Mac OS X team, and as a result we will not be able to release Leopard at our Worldwide Developers Conference in early June as planned. While Leopard's features will be complete by then, we cannot deliver the quality release that we and our customers expect from us. We now plan to show our developers a near final version of Leopard at the conference, give them a beta copy to take home so they can do their final testing, and ship Leopard in October. We think it will be well worth the wait. Life often presents tradeoffs, and in this case we're sure we've made the right ones. [Apr 12, 2007]

It is still unknown though if the Java 6 will be available for Leopard only but I have no hope to see anything of release quality sooner than October taking into account the total number of Java-related sessions announced for upcoming WWDC, namely:

518 Real-world WebObjects Solutions

138 Discover Java on Mac OS X Leopard

535 Bring Your Java Application to Mac OS X Leopard

On democracy and humanity

A couple of articles to read...

On humanity

On democracy (en)
On democracy (ru)

God save the USA

Java One 2006 - Third day

The third day begun with the IBM's general session where Erich Gamma and John Wiegand talked about the Eclipse development process - people and tools, project rythm and project health.

As to the sessions, the two most interesting were TS-1548 Extreme GUI Makeover Lookin' Better and TS-3399 A Simple Framework for Desktop Applications. See the full official announcement.

PS: Alan Samuel said: "we will be agressive with Java 6 for Mac OS X release", which MAY mean that we'll see the release soon after the Sun's release of Java 6.

Java One 2006 - Second day - Excelent Desktop Java Sessions

There are two excelent Java desktop sessions I've attended today: TS-1099 Dos and Don'ts for Swing Applications and TS-1305 High-Performance GUIs.

Java One 2006 - Second day

The General session is Oracle's today. So, stick with NetBeans 5.0 beta 2 or whatever build you use for form editing until further announcement.

I have filed a bug which had been fixed in development trunk. I've got the following comment from Tomas Pavek (he fixed the bug, BTW) also:

Now - the fix is easy in NetBeans, but there is no workaround on your side. It's a shame this is broken in 5.0, but it is far too late to get the fix into the release. I can only think about creating a patch for you, possibly making it available later as hotfix on AU.

Let's ask for a hotfix for NetBeans 5.0!

Moving to Linux

Я таки решился - с сегодняшнего дня на домашней машине у меня будет жить ещё и Linux.
